Who we are

When your spouse starts medical school, it is both an exciting and stressful time in your relationship. Exciting because they are taking a step toward fulfilling their dreams. Stressful because medical school is a huge commitment of time and energy, and you have likely just moved to Augusta where you don’t know where to eat, where to shop, or where to meet people who can relate to what you are going through.

The Solution: the Medical Student Auxiliary

Established in 1947 as the Medical Dames, MSA began as a group of women who felt bonded by the experience of having a husband in the medical field. MSA is an organization with the perfect balance of service and social functions. Spouses of medical students at MCG are invited to join our organization, rich with history of friendship and support.

Some of the social activities you can expect to participate in are an Ice Cream Social at the beginning of the year to welcome new members, a Thanksgiving Progressive Dinner with MSA members and spouses, and a Wine and Cheese Party in the Spring (an MSA tradition which started in the seventies!) just to name a few.

You can also look forward to guidance from those who have walked this road before you. In the Spring, MSA will host a Residents’ Wives Advisory Panel where you can ask spouses who now have husbands in residency all the questions you have about life after medical school. In addition, wives of second, third, and fourth years are always around to answer questions like where to get your hair done, what to expect during Family Weekend and the White Coat Ceremony, which restaurants are good (and fit into the student budget!), what to wear to Doctor Prom, and anything else that might be weighing on your mind.

More than anything, MSA is friendship. The root of who we are hasn’t changed since we were founded years ago - a group of people bonded by a common experience. In four short years, your journey as the spouse of a medical student will come to an end. We hope you will become a member of MSA and maximize this time in your life.
